RESUMO

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) presents a five-year survival rate below 20%, underscoring the need for improved prognostic markers. Our study analyzed ESCC-specific datasets to identify consistently differentially expressed genes. A Venn analysis followed by gene network interactions revealed 23 key genes, from which we built a prognostic model using the COX algorithm (p = 0.000245, 3-year AUC = 0.967). This model stratifies patients into risk groups, with high-risk individuals showing worse outcomes and lower chemotherapy sensitivity. Moreover, a link between risk scores and M2 macrophage infiltration, as well as significant correlations with immune checkpoint genes (e.g., SIGLEC15, PDCD1LG2, and HVCR2), was discovered. High-risk patients had lower Tumor Immune Dysfunction and Exclusion (TIDE) values, suggesting potential responsiveness to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapy. Our efficient 23-gene prognostic model for ESCC indicates a dual utility in assessing prognosis and guiding therapeutic decisions, particularly in the context of ICB therapy for high-risk patients.

Purpose: Concrete epidemiological evidence has suggested the mutually-contributing effect respectively between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and periodontitis (PD); however, their shared crosstalk mechanism remains an open issue. Method: The NAFLD, PD, and T2DM-related datasets were obtained from the NCBI GEO repository. Their common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified and the functional enrichment analysis performed by the DAVID platform determined relevant biological processes and pathways. Then, the STRING database established a PPI network of such DEGs and topological analysis through Cytoscape 3.7.1 software along with the machine-learning analysis by the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) algorithm screened out hub characteristic genes. Their efficacy was validated by external datasets using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and gene expression and location of the most robust one was determined using single-cell sequencing and immunohistochemical staining. Finally, the promising drugs were predicted through the CTD database, and the CB-DOCK 2 and Pymol platform mimicked molecular docking. Result: Intersection of differentially expressed genes from three datasets identified 25 shared DEGs of the three diseases, which were enriched in MHC II-mediated antigen presenting process. PPI network and LASSO machine-learning analysis determined 4 feature genes, of which the MS4A6A gene mainly expressed by macrophages was the hub gene and key immune cell type. Molecular docking simulation chosen fenretinide as the most promising medicant for MS4A6A+ macrophages. Conclusion: MS4A6A+ macrophages were suggested to be important immune-related mediators in the progression of NAFLD, PD, and T2DM pathologies.

The damage caused by petroleum hydrocarbon pollution to soil and groundwater environment is becoming increasingly significant. The vadose zone is the only way for petroleum hydrocarbon pollutants to leak from surface into groundwater. The spatial distribution characteristics of indigenous microorganisms in vadose zone, considering presence of capillary zones, have rarely been reported. To explore the spatial distribution characteristics of indigenous microorganisms in vadose zone contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons, a one-dimensional column migration experiment was conducted using n-hexadecane as characteristic pollutant. Soil samples were collected periodically from different heights during experiment. Corresponding environmental factors were monitored online. The microbial community structure and spatial distribution characteristics of the cumulative relative abundance were systematically analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing. In addition, the microbial degradation mechanism of n-hexadecane was analyzed using metabolomics. The results showed that presence of capillary zone had a strong retarding effect on n-hexadecane infiltration. Leaked pollutants were mainly concentrated in areas with strong capillary action. Infiltration and displacement of NAPL-phase pollutants were major driving force for change in moisture content (θ) and electric conductivity (EC) in vadose zone. The degradation by microorganisms results in a downward trend in potential of hydrogen (pH) and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP). Five petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial phyla and 11 degradable straight-chain alkane bacterial genera were detected. Microbial degradation was strong in the area near edge of capillary zone and locations of pollutant accumulation. Mainly Sphingomonas and Nocardioides bacteria were involved in microbial degradation of n-hexadecane. Single-end oxidation involved microbial degradation of n-hexadecane (C16H34). The oxygen consumed, hexadecanoic acid (C16H32O2) produced during this process, and release of hydrogen ions (H+) were the driving factors for reduction of ORP and pH. The vadose zone in this study considered presence of capillary zone, which was more in line with actual contaminated site conditions compared with previous studies. This study systematically elucidated vertical distribution characteristics of petroleum hydrocarbon pollutants and spatiotemporal variation characteristics of indigenous microorganisms in vadose zone considered presence of capillary zone. In addition, the n-hexadecane degradation mechanism was elucidated using metabolomics. This study provides theoretical support for development of natural attenuation remediation measures for petroleum-hydrocarbon-contaminated soil and groundwater.

BACKGROUND: Current evidence implicates a significant association between depression and obesity and related metabolic dysfunction. The weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) was recently identified as an ideal index that integrates total body fat, muscle mass, and bone mass. This study investigated the relationship between WWI and depressive symptoms in adults. METHODS: Participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2018) were enrolled. Depressive symptom severity was measured with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Survey-weighted multivariable logistic regression, subgroup analysis, and generalized additive models were used to determine the relationship between WWI and depressive symptoms. RESULTS: A total of 34,575 participants were included, with a mean WWI of 11.01; 2,979 participants were suspected of having depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 score ≥ 10). A significant positive association was identified between WWI and depressive symptoms (odds ratio = 1.416, 95 % confidence interval: 1.303-1.539, P < 0.0001). Subgroup analyses suggested that the association between WWI and depressive symptoms was stronger in individuals who were female, overweight, divorced, middle-aged or older (over 40 years old), and had diabetes. Furthermore, the non-linear multivariable regression revealed an inflection point for the WWI at 11.438, and the association was only significant when the WWI was higher than this point. LIMITATIONS: This study was retrospective and only included participants from the United States; therefore, further validation is needed from studies in other countries, especially middle-to-low-income countries, using longitudinal cohorts. CONCLUSIONS: This study identified a significant positive association between WWI and depressive symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to thoroughly assess the relevance of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in the diagnosis and prognosis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), and design a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: Using Stata 14.0 software, a meta-analysis was carried out by looking for pertinent studies up to February 20, 2023, in the online databases PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and CNKI. The clinicopathologic and prognostic data were evaluated using the combined advantage ratio (OR) and combined hazard ratio (HR), respectively. The threshold effects and publication bias were quantified using Spearman's correlation and the Deeks funnel plot asymmetry tests, respectively. RESULTS: A total of 36 pertinent studies with a literature quality score of 7 or above were included in this study. Of them, 22 papers dealt with clinicopathological characterization, 15 dealt with prognostic analysis, and 13 dealt with diagnostic analysis. The findings demonstrated that high expression of upregulated circRNAs was associated with worse clinicopathological features (tumor size: OR=3.61, 95% CI:1.45-5.78; TNM stage: OR=2.12, 95% CI:1.41-2.83; lymph node metastasis: OR=2.87, 95% CI:1.67-4.07) and worse OS (HR=1.49, 95% CI:1.26-1.77). High downregulated circRNAs expression was linked to improved clinicopathologic characteristics (TNM staging: OR=0.35, 95% CI:0.13- 0.95) and longer survival (HR=0.48, 95% CI:0.27-0.84); combined sensitivity was 0.77 (95% CI: 0.71-0.82), specificity was 0.80 (95% CI:0.74-0.86), and area under the subject operating characteristic curve (AUC) was 0.86 (95% CI:0.82- 0.88). CONCLUSION: CircRNAs are useful for ESCC patient diagnosis and prognosis, and they are anticipated to be unique potential biomarkers for ESCC clinical diagnosis.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) accounts for over 90% of total in China, and the five-year survival rate for patients is less than 30%. Accordingly, the identification of novel, effective early diagnosis markers and therapeutic targets for ESCC is of paramount importance. KIFC1 has been identified as highly expressed in several types of cancer, although its prognostic value is inconsistent, and no research has been conducted specifically on its effect on ESCC. To investigate the expression and function of KIFC1 in ESCC, we conducted immunohistochemical staining on 30 pairs of para-carcinoma tissue and cancerous tissues, revealing a significant increase in KIFC1 expression in ESCC tissues. Using siRNA to knock down KIFC1 significantly reduced the proliferation of EC109 ESCC cells both in vitro and in vivo. Bioinformatics analysis revealed a highly significant positive correlation between KIFC1 overexpression and signaling pathways associated with tumor proliferation pathways. In EC109 cells, overexpression of KIFC1 significantly increased the rate of centrosome amplification and the likelihood of pseudo-bipolar division. Furthermore, the expression of KIFC1 and the rate of centrosome amplification in ESCC tissues were also positively correlated. In order to explore the underline molecular mechanisms, we identified, through proteomics, that KIFC1 binds to the protein Aurora B. The knockdown of KIFC1 significantly reduced the distribution of Aurora B on the metaphase plate and substantially inhibited the phosphorylation of its classical substrate, Histone H3. In conclusion, these findings indicate the potential utility of KIFC1 as both a tumor marker and a promising target for therapeutic interventions.

Microbial community, as the decomposers of constructed wetland (CW), plays crucial role in biodegradation and biotransformation of pollutants, nutrient cycling and the maintenance of ecosystem balance. In this study, 9 water samples, 6 sediment samples, and 8 plant samples were collected in Annan CW, which has the functions of water treatment and wetland culture park. The characteristics of microbial community structure in different media were illustrated by using of high-throughput sequencing-based metagenomics approach and statistical analysis. Meanwhile, this study identified and classified human pathogens in CW to avoid potential risks to human health. The results showed that dominant bacteria phyla in CW include Proteobacteria, Bacteroides, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes and Verrucomicrobia. The distribution of microorganisms in three media is different, but not significant. And the pH and DO profoundly affected microbe abundance, followed by water temperature. The microbial diversity in sediments is the highest, which is similar with the detection of human pathogens in sediments. Moreover, compared with Calamus, Lythrum salicaria and Reed, Scirpus tabernaemontani has fewer pathogenic microorganisms. The distribution of microorganisms in the CW is complex, and a variety of human pathogens are detected, which is more prone to create potential risks to human health and should receive additional attention.

Nitrogen cycling, as an important biogeochemical process in groundwater, strongly impacts the energy and matter flow of groundwater ecology. Phthalate esters (PAEs) were screened as key environmental stressors in the groundwater of Beijing, contributing to the alteration of microbial community structure and functions; thus, it could be deduced that these stressors might influence nitrogen cycling that is almost exclusively mediated by microorganisms. Identification of the influences of PAEs on groundwater nitrogen cycling and exploration of the potential influence mechanisms and pathways are vital but still challenging. This study explored the influence mechanisms and pathways of the environmental stressor PAE on nitrogen cycling in groundwater collected from a typical monitoring station in Beijing based on high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics analysis combined with mediation analysis methods. The results suggested that among the 5 detected PAEs, dimethyl phthalate and diethyl phthalate significantly negatively impacted nitrogen cycling processes, especially nitrogen fixation and denitrification processes (p < 0.05), in groundwater. Their influences were fully or partially mediated by functional microorganisms, particularly assigned keystone genera (such as Dechloromonas, Aeromonas and Noviherbaspirillum), whose abundance was significantly inhibited by these PAEs via dysregulation of carbohydrate metabolism and activation of defense mechanisms. These findings confirmed that the influences of environmental stressors PAEs on nitrogen cycling in groundwater might be mediated by the "PAE stress-groundwater microbiome-nitrogen cycling alteration" pathway. This study may advance the understanding of the consequences of environmental stressors on groundwater ecology and support the ecological hazard assessment of groundwater stressors.

Groundwater level recovery has a significant effect on the sources and transformation of nitrogen in groundwater, but there are still few studies on the influences of the water table on the sources and transformation of nitrogen in groundwater using field data. In this study, the changes in groundwater level, geochemical composition, and isotopic signatures of NO3- and NH4+ during a period of groundwater level recovery at a pilot site were analyzed in detail. The water table underwent progressive recovery of almost 1.6 m in 16 months. At a depth of 5.5 m below the surface, both low NH4+ and high NO3- appeared in the groundwater, whereas below that depth, both high NH4+ and low NO3- simultaneously appeared in the groundwater. The main sources of NO3- were manure and septic waste, and NH4+ fertilizers. The main sources of NH4+ were mineral fertilizers. The main transformation process were nitrification and denitrification at a depth of 5.5 m below the surface; below that depth, the main transformation processes were denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA). This study provides a theoretical understanding of the relationship between the changing water table and nitrogen in groundwater level recovery areas.

Background: The negative effects of obesity on hepatic steatosis and fibrosis have received considerable attention in recent years. The weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) reflects weight-independent centripetal obesity. Herein, we provide the first investigation of a link between WWI, hepatic steatosis, and liver fibrosis. Methods: We used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017-2020 to conduct a cross-sectional study. The linear relationship between WWI, controlled attenuation parameters, and liver stiffness measurements (LSM) was investigated using multivariate linear regression models. The nonlinear relationship was described using fitted smoothed curves and threshold effect analyses. Subgroup analyses were performed based on gender, age, body mass index, diabetes, hypertension, drinking, and smoking. Results: This population-based study included 7,594 people, 50.74% of whom were men and 49.26% of whom were women. Multivariate linear regression analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between WWI and hepatic steatosis [CAP, ß=7.60, 95% confidence interval (CI) (4.42, 10.78), P<0.0001]. This positive association was stronger when excessive alcohol intake was present compared to when it was absent (P for interaction = 0.031), and when hypertension was present compared to when it was not (P for interaction = 0.014). The linear relationship between WWI and liver fibrosis was not statistically significant on multiple regression analysis [LSM, ß=0.03, 95% CI (-0.26, 0.32), P=0.84]. However, a U-shaped association was seen between WWI and LSM, with a negative correlation when WWI< 10.92 and a positive correlation when WWI > 10.92. Conclusion: We report a strong association between WWI and hepatic steatosis, and suggest that it may potentially be used as a simple anthropometric index to predict hepatic steatosis.

Understanding the microstructure-property relationships of porous media is of great practical significance, based on which macroscopic physical properties can be directly derived from measurable microstructural informatics. However, establishing reliable microstructure-property mappings in an explicit manner is difficult, due to the intricacy, stochasticity, and heterogeneity of porous microstructures. In this paper, a data-driven computational framework is presented to investigate the inherent microstructure-permeability linkage for natural porous rocks, where multiple techniques are integrated together, including microscopy imaging, stochastic reconstruction, microstructural characterization, pore-scale simulation, feature selection, and data-driven modeling. A large number of 3D digital rocks with a wide porosity range are acquired from microscopy imaging and stochastic reconstruction techniques. A broad variety of morphological descriptors are used to quantitatively characterize pore microstructures from different perspectives, and they compose the raw feature pool for feature selection. High-fidelity lattice Boltzmann simulations are conducted to resolve fluid flow passing through porous media, from which reliable permeability references are obtained. The optimal feature set that best represents permeability is identified through a performance-oriented feature selection process, upon which a cost-effective surrogate model is rapidly fitted to approximate the microstructure-permeability mapping via data-driven modeling. This surrogate model exhibits great advantages over empirical/analytical formulas in terms of prediction accuracy and generalization capacity, which can predict reliable permeability values spanning four orders of magnitude. Besides, feature selection also greatly enhances the interpretability of the data-driven prediction model, from which new insights into the mechanism of how microstructural characteristics determine intrinsic permeability are obtained.

A better understanding of the photosynthesis and soil water storage regulation of soybean production will be helpful to develop a water conservation strategy under a rain-fed farming system. Reducing the leakage of CO2 bundle sheath cells and improving the photosynthesis capacity and gas exchange characteristics of soybean leaves will contribute to increase yield under the dryland agricultural system and provide a scientific basis. Therefore, during 2019 and 2020, soybean exposed to different cultivation modes to analyze the response curves of photosynthesis and CO2 under different deficit irrigation strategies. In this study, we used two cultivation models: RB: ridge covered with biodegradable film and furrow area not covered; CF: conventional flat land planting under four deficit irrigation modes (R: rainwater irrigation; IB: branch stage irrigation (220 mm); IP: Irrigation during podding (220 mm); IBP: branch stage irrigation (110 mm), podding stage irrigation (110 mm). Compared with CF-IBP treatment, RB-IBP had significant effects on rainwater collection, SWS, and soybean yield. Photo-response curve analysis showed that RB-IBP treatment a significant increase in Pn, Gs, Ci, Tr, leaf WUE, and chlorophyll ab content. Under different irrigation strategies, maximum net photosynthetic rate (Pnmax), light saturation point (LSP), and apparent quantum efficiency under RB-IBP treatment (α), Pn under respiration rate and CO2 response curve were significantly higher than that under CF cultivation mode. Compared with RB culture mode under different irrigation strategies, CF cultivation mode significantly increases Δ13C and CO2 sheath cell leakage (Փ); it also led to a significant decline in the ratio of Ci/Ca concentration. This study shows that RB-IBP treatment is the best water-saving strategy because it means reducing the leakage of CO2 from the bundle sheath, thus significantly increasing soil water storage, photosynthetic capacity, and soybean yield.

As a well-established member of a strongly conserved protein family, DDX5 binds to RNA helicase in a specific manner, which can regulate mRNA transcription, protein translation and synthesis and precursor messenger RNA processing or alternative splicing. The effects of DDX5 on carcinogenesis and cancer progression are increasingly evident. Circular RNAs (circRNAs), a novel group of functionally non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) with disordered expression, are associated with various pathological processes (e.g., tumors). circRNA pattern and its function regulated by DDX5 have not yet been determined. According to our findings, DDX5 was dramatically upregulated for stomach cancer tissues, and its overexpression contributed to the cell growth and invasion of GC cells. Based on the analysis of genome-wide circRNAs conducted with circRNA sequencing, DDX5 induces a large number of circRNAs. Further to screen several circRNAs from PHF14 for function, it was found that circPHF14 was essential for the growth and tumorigenesis of DDX5-positive gastric cancer cells. These findings suggest that in addition to the messenger RNA and microRNA patterns, DDX5 also effects a circRNA pattern, as demonstrated by circPHF14. DDX5-induced circRNAs have been found to be of crucial importance for the growth of DDX5-positive gastric cancer cells, providing a new therapeutic target.

Two-dimensional sand tank experiments were designed to investigate the retention process of the capillary zone during the migration of light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) pollutants. The fine sand and silt media experiments simulated the LNAPL migration process given a shallow point source leakage scenario. The results indicate that the LNAPL was retained in the capillary zone. A retention factor, based on the ratio of the change in the vertical migration velocity of the LNAPL front with time, was proposed to quantitatively characterize the retention effect. The retention factor and time satisfied the function of σ=A×exp(-kt). And the retention factor increased gradually with time, indicating the enhanced retention effect of capillary zone on the vertical migration of LNAPL. The concentration change rate was then used to investigate the LANPL redistribution process, which had a relationship with time of νc=B×ln(t)+C. The capillary zone could be divided from top to bottom into a weak retention zone (B > 0, vc < 0), a strong retention zone (B < 0), and a barrier zone (B > 0, vc > 0). The retention effect of capillary zone on LNAPL migration gradually strengthened during the vertical migration of LNAPL. In addition, the coefficient B had a relationship with the environmental factors (i.e., EC, pH, and ORP) of B=a×sin(b×α×ß×γ)c and the fitting coefficient R2 of the function was above 0.913 for both media, indicating a strong correlation between the LNAPL redistribution process and the key environmental factors.

Organic contaminants, especially hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs), pose potential ecological threats even at environmental concentrations. Characterization of HOC profiles and identification of key environmental stressors are vital but still challenging in groundwater quality management. In this study, a strategy for identifying the key environmental stressors among HOCs in groundwater based on integrated chemical monitoring technologies and microbial ecology analysis methods was proposed and applied to typical groundwater samples. Specifically, the characteristics of HOCs were systematically analyzed based on nontargeted and targeted approaches, and microbial community assembly and specific biomarker analysis were combined to determine the major ecological processes and key environmental stressors. The results showed that a total of 234 HOCs were detected in groundwater collected from Tongzhou, Beijing; among them, phthalate esters (PAEs) were screened out as key environmental stressors, considering that they made relatively higher microbial ecology contributions. Furthermore, their influences on the structure and function of the groundwater microbial community were evaluated by adopting high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics analysis technologies. These findings confirmed PAEs as vital determinants driving microbial assembly, shifting community structure, and regulating community function in groundwater; in addition, the findings validated the feasibility and suitability of the proposed strategy.

In this study, a novel iron-encapsulated biochar (Fe@BC) was prepared using the biomass cultivated with an iron-containing solution. The iron in Fe@BC showed the phase change from Fe3O4 to α-Fe, and to CFe15.1, with the increase of pyrolysis temperature (500-900 °C), and a graphene shell formed on the surface of Fe@BC. In addition, the signals assigned to the π-π* shake up, pyridinic N, graphitic N, and defects of Fe@BC were found to be stronger as the pyrolysis temperature increased. The F4@B9 sample, which was prepared at 900 °C, exhibited an excellent performance (98.01 %) to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for the degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol. Electron paramagnetic resonanceand chemical quenching experiments revealed that reactive oxygen radicals (ROS) including sulfate radical (•SO4-), hydroxyl radical (•OH), superoxide radical (•O2-), and singlet oxygen (1O2) existed in the F4@B9/PDS system. Furthermore, the micro-electrolysis process facilitated the generation of •O2- (12.35 %) and 1O2 (6.49 %) compared with the pure PDS system. Density functional theory revealed that, for the F4@B9-activated PDS process, the graphene shell of F4@B9 served as catalytic active sites as well. According to the correlation analysis, the iron specie of CFe15.1 was more favorable for the generation of ROS than α-Fe. Also, π-π* shake up, pyridinic N, graphitic N, and defects participated in the PDS activation. This study provides a new method for the preparation of high-performance catalysts from naturally grown biomass with high iron contents.

Background: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a novel infectious disease with no specific therapeutics and vaccines. We hypothesize that health education in vulnerable people would ameliorate their knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) regarding SFTS and reduce its prevalence. Methods: A four-stage cluster cross-section study in sixteen community units was performed. Sixteen groups were allocated to the intervention or control groups. A 6 months education program was administrated. The primary outcome was KAP scores 6 months after intervention. Predictors of KAP score changes were also analyzed. Results: Eight hundred and fifteen valid questionnaires pre-intervention and 767 ones post-intervention were retreated. No significant differences were found in demographic characteristics and KAP scores before intervention. A significant improvement in KAP score (16.8 ± 4.7 vs. 22.0 ± 4.2, p < 0.001) in the intervention group was observed compare with the controls. Educational level and intervention program were the common predictors of KAP score changes. Conclusions: Education improved KAP scores in SFTS vulnerable people which may contribute to the control of the disease.

An analytical algorithm coupling free-phase migration, precipitation, and natural attenuation through volatilization and biodegradation (FPVB) was developed to calculate the flux of light nonaqueous-phase liquid (LNAPL) leaking from unsaturated zone to groundwater. Sandbox and soil column experiments were performed to identify the LNAPL migration characteristics and states to provide data to establish and verify FPVB algorithm. For free-phase migration, the Kinematic Oily Pollutant Transport (KOPT) model was used to determine LNAPL movement velocity and leakage time. The correlations of water saturation, residual LNAPL saturation and the cumulative dissolution ratio of residual LNAPL were described using an empirical formula for the precipitation leaching process. Equations for diesel volatilization kinetics and first order degradation were used to describe the natural attenuation processes. Coupling the algorithms for the different stages gave the final FPVB algorithm. The FPVB algorithm was used to describe the pollution situation at a real site, and the results were consistent with the actual situation. The FPVB algorithm could be used to quickly assess the scale and degree of pollution with little information on the parameters for the actual LNAPL leakage event.

Colloids have a significant influence on the migration of nuclides in claystone, which is an important geological barrier. The sorption of strontium on claystone in the presence of FeOOH colloids was investigated in samples from the Suhongtu site, a candidate high-level radioactive waste disposal site in China. The effects of colloid amount, solid content, and pH were investigated by batch tests, and the sorption reaction mechanism was analyzed by kinetic modeling and microscopic characterization techniques. The results indicate that the sorption of Sr by claystone increased with the solids content, and the claystone had a stronger Sr sorption capacity under alkaline conditions. The Sr sorption kinetics were best described by the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models, which revealed that the progress is affected by physical diffusion and chemical sorption. Furthermore, the microscopic characterization results demonstrate that cation exchange reactions and surface complex reactions are the main sorption mechanisms for Sr sorption on claystone. Ca and Mg plasmas in claystone minerals can have cation replacement reactions with Sr, and functional groups such as -OH and [CO3]2- can have complexation reactions with Sr to adsorb Sr on the surface of the claystone. Additionally, the presence of the FeOOH colloid inhibited the sorption effect of claystone slightly. The FeOOH colloid could occupy sorption sites on the claystone surface, which reduces the activity of the functional groups and inhibits the sorption of Sr on claystone.
